New skin cell regeneration technology may kill aging
New skin cell regeneration technology may kill aging when Cambridge University researchers reprogrammed skin cells from people aged 38 to 53 to make them 30 years “younger”.
According to researchers, this method will contribute to turning back the clock more than previous reprogramming methods, without damaging the cells, because scientists were able to restore the functions lost in the old cells.
The technique has the potential to revolutionize regenerative medicine, especially if it can be replicated in other cell types and tissues throughout the body according to preliminary research findings.
The aging cells in the new experiments resembled skin cells called fibroblasts, which produce collagen, a protein that binds the body together and keeps it strong.
The number of fibroblasts in human skin decreases with age, and these cells become wilted as we age.
The new study was conducted at the Babraham Institute, a Life Science Research Institute in Cambridge, and was published in the journal.
“Our results represent a big step forward in our understanding of cell reprogramming,” said Dr. Diljit Gill of the Babraham Institute, where the research was carried out. “We have shown that cells can regenerate without losing their function and that regeneration seeks to restore some of the functions of old cells.”
“The fact that we also saw a reversal of aging indicators in disease-related genes is especially promising for the future of this work,” Gill added.
