The Russian Defense Ministry announced that the modification and modernization of several submarines and warships for the country’s navy will be completed this year.
Russia’s Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigu, said, “In 2022, Russian experts are expected to complete the modification and modernization of the Irkutsk nuclear submarine, adding, the large military missile ship Admiral Vinogradov’s maintenance and modernization work, as well as the modernization of the Tomsk missile cruiser, will be completed this year.”
In 2019, Russia began maintenance and modernization work on the “Irkutsk” nuclear submarine at the “Zvezda” plant, and the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the submarine would receive new weapons systems and be able to carry 48 new Kalibr -BM, Onyx, and Tsirkon missiles. The submarine is expected to return to service for the Russian army in 2023.
This submarine is 154 meters long, 18.2 meters wide, and has a displacement of 23.8 thousand tons, it can also dive to 600 meters below the water’s surface and travel at a speed of 30 knots.
