Shanghai launches first China–Europe cargo train to Asia
The Shanghai Customs Directorate said that a China-Europe freight train, carrying over 980 tons of goods, left Shanghai last Thursday afternoon for Almaty in Kazakhstan, according to Xinhua.
The departure marked the launch of China-Europe’s first freight train from Shanghai to Central Asia.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Shanghai temporarily suspended China-Europe freight train service but resumed in May to meet strong demand from foreign trade companies.
In the first half of this year, Shanghai handled 12 shipping trains between China and Europe, carrying 1,166 standard containers weighing more than 7,234 tons, valued at 293 million yuan (approximately US $43.5 million).
Shanghai launched its first China-Europe freight train in September 2021. The city currently has nine shipping routes connected with 13 cities in five countries along the Belt and Road.
Until now, Shanghai has handled 35 shipping trains, carrying 3,438 containers of goods weighing a total of 23,600 tons, worth 1.024 billion yuan.
