Additionally, the report indicated “unprecedented numbers” of people displaced by violence in Afghanistan and Myanmar over the course of 2021, with similarly high numbers for Somalia and South Sudan.
Globally, the number of displaced people has reached 38 million, 94% of whom have been forced to flee from meteorological disasters, with more than 25 million under the age of 18.
While more data is needed to assess long-term impacts, Bilak said it is clear that protecting and supporting displaced children and young people is critical for the future, noting that “a happy and healthy child” would be more likely to contribute to a society and functioning economy “.
