ALECSO launches award for media, freedom of honor Shireen Abu Akleh’s press
In commemoration of her memory and in support of media freedoms and journalists, the Arab League Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), a Tunis-based organization of the Arab League, announced the establishment of the Shireen Abu Akleh Award for Media and Freedom of the Press.
The statement was made at the end of the 117th session of the Arab League Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), which took place in Tunisia on the 18th and 19th of May.
Shireen Abu Akleh, a Jerusalem-based Al-Jazeera correspondent, was killed on May 11 during an Israeli army assault in the northern West Bank city of Jenin. Abu Akleh and other journalists in the area were wearing protective gear that plainly identified them as journalists.
