Turkish Minister visits Al-Aqsa Mosque complex
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut avuşolu on Wednesday visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the occupied city of Jerusalem according to local sources.
It said that avuşolu was conducted by a group from the Islamic Religious Endowment (Waqf) Department on a tour of the mosque compound’s courtyards without being escorted by Israeli police.
The visit to the mosque compound occurred after a day of separate meetings in Ramallah with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki.
It also occurred amid Israeli settler intentions to invade the holy site en masse on May 29 to commemorate the 55th anniversary of “Jerusalem Day” or “Jerusalem Reunification Day.”
“Jerusalem Day” is an annual commemoration of Jerusalem’s “reunification” in 1967, when Israeli troops liberated East Jerusalem from Jordanian authority during the June War and have occupied it ever since.
Thousands of right-wing Israelis, including a substantial number of Israeli settlers from the occupied West Bank, would march through Jerusalem districts, including Sheikh Jarrah and Bab al-Amoud, waving Israeli flags, dancing and singing, and waving Israeli flags (Damascus Gate).
