15,000 people demonstrate in UK on Nakba Day calling for ending Israel’s ethnic cleansing
On Saturday, at least 15,000 demonstrators gathered in London to demand justice for Palestinian victims of Israeli violence and ethnic cleansing in the past and present.
The national march in the United Kingdom took place one day before Nakba Day, which remembers the 750,000 Palestinians who were expelled when Israel was founded in 1948 and those who are still displaced today.
It comes after Israeli authorities killed veteran Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, 51, on Wednesday while she was covering an Israeli security raid in the occupied West Bank, then savagely assaulted mourners at her funeral on Friday.
In a speech, Palestinian Forum in Britain (PFB) Chair Zaher Birawi said, “Let us remind Shireen that her last report from the occupied territories and her funeral scene – as you all have seen – was the most influential and will continue to be the most visible and carved in our memory.”
“You Shireen, your blood was a big plague on the occupation, its racist and terrorist army, and the hypocrite capitals in the West.
“Yes, dear friends and comrades, it was the most powerful report because she penned it with her precious blood, which she gave for the homeland and its capital, Jerusalem.”
“Shireen, may you rest in peace. Rest in peace, Shireen, since your blood will shorten the path to a free Jerusalem and Palestine.”
