Jordan condemns ongoing attacks on Greek Orthodox Patriarchate’s properties
Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates on Friday condemned continued settler attacks on the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate’s effects in the occupied city of Jerusalem, according to Jordan News Agency (Petra).
The ministry cautioned of the repercussion of the Israeli top court’s recent ruling in favor of the settler takeover of two high-profile hotels in the Old City of Jerusalem, stressing its denial of the Israeli court’s authority in the occupied Palestinian territories and in East Jerusalem.
Ministry representative Haitham Abu Alfoul confirmed Jordan’s absolute rejection of all measures aimed at altering the identity of occupied East Jerusalem, including the Old City.
He also confirmed his country’s rejection of changing the legal and historical status quo in Jerusalem, including Islamic and Christian properties and endowments, voicing Amman’s uncompromising stance that supports the Jerusalemites and the Greek Orthodox Church against such attacks.
He clarified that Israel bears full responsibility for ongoing attacks and violations by the settlers, stressing that Jordan, based on the Hashemite Custodianship over the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, will take every practicable effort to protect the holy sites and support the legal and historical status quo in Jerusalem in order to make it a key for peace and a symbol for tolerance and harmony.
