MADA condemns the pursuit, arrest of Palestinian journalists by IOF
MADA, the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms issued a statement on Wednesday condemning the Israeli occupation forces’ continuous pursuit and imprisonment of Palestinian journalists.
The occupation forces detained journalist Omar Nasr Abu Al-Rub, a correspondent for the “Palestine Times Network,” from his home in Ramallah’s Al-Irsal neighborhood on Friday morning, April 1st, and photojournalist Muhammad Al-Dweik on Sunday morning, April 3rd, after raiding his home and confiscating his mobile phone and laptop, according to the statement.
“On March 21st, 2022, the occupation forces arrested freelance journalist Bushra Jamal Al-Taweel, and she was sentenced to three months of administrative imprisonment,” according to the statement.
“It’s worth noting that in the second half of last year, MADA launched a media campaign against Palestinian journalists’ arrests by Israeli occupation forces, with the goal of focusing on the arrests and their danger to media freedom, which will continue to be a threat to journalists and media freedoms unless the perpetrators are criminalized, noting that “arrest” constituted 8% of all Israeli violations against journalists during the previous year.”
MADA demanded that the United Nations Security Council Resolution (No. 2222) on the protection of journalists, which has been in effect since 2015, be activated, and urged the international community to pressure the Israeli occupation government to release detained journalists and provide them with protection so that they can continue to work freely.
