Russia was suspended from Human Rights Council by the UN
Russia was suspended from Human Rights Council by the UN after the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) are scheduled to vote on a resolution proposed by the United States to expel Russia from the UN’s top human rights body over allegations that Russian soldiers killed civilians as they retreated from the region surrounding Kiev.
The brief resolution, which will be voted on Thursday, expresses “grave concern” about the ongoing human rights and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, especially “reports of violations and abuses of human rights and violations of international humanitarian law by the Russian Federation, including gross and systematic violations and abuses of human rights.”
A two-thirds majority of UNGA members voting “yes” or “no” would be required for approval, with abstentions not factored in the calculation.
Russia has urged an undisclosed number of countries to vote “no,” claiming that abstention or failure to vote would be seen as an unfriendly gesture that would harm bilateral relations.
Russia claims the attempt to exclude it from the Human Rights Council is a political act by countries seeking to maintain their dominant position and influence over the world in a so-called “non-paper” obtained by The Associated Press news agency.
“We believe Russian army members committed war crimes in Ukraine, and we believe Russia should be held accountable,” Thomas-Greenfield said on Monday.
