WhatsApp warns against WhatsApp!!
WhatsApp messages sent to billions of users warned of a dangerous Android app that could steal sensitive information from them.
The President of WhatsApp, Will Cathcart, on Twitter, put users on alert for a malware-filled Android app called ‘Hey WhatsApp’, a developer called ‘HeyMods’, according to Euronews.
Cathcart said that the app might seem harmless initially, and it was designed to steal sensitive personal data stored on Android phones.
The app was found outside the Google Play store, but fortunately, Google Play Protect can now detect and disable these harmful and fake versions of WhatsApp.
This follows the collaboration of Google and WhatsApp to work together to stop this dangerous program in its tracks.
If you have a harmful “HeyWhatsApp” app on your phone, make sure you delete it now. Also, if you have a free antivirus app on your phone, check to check if any additional malware has been uploaded to your device.
Cathcart said of the threat, “WhatsApp users should be reminded that downloading a fake or modified version of WhatsApp is never a good idea.
These apps appear harmless but may circumvent WhatsApp’s privacy and security guarantees. Our security team recently discovered malware hidden within apps – displayed outside Google Play – from a developer called “HeyMods,” which included “Hey WhatsApp” and others.
These apps promised new features but were just a trick to steal personal information stored on people’s phones. We shared what we found with Google and worked with them to combat harmful applications.
Google Play Protect on Android can now detect and disable fake malicious versions of WhatsApp, previously downloaded. We appreciate Google’s assistance in its ongoing work to prevent harmful applications from spreading on Android devices. ”
Cathcart said WhatsApp would continue to work on banning these kinds of applications from Android devices, from now on.
