Japan grants $5m in emergency assistance for Palestine refugees
Japan’s representative office to Palestine said in a press release that Japan would contribute $5 million to emergency support for Palestine refugees.
The Government of Japan would contribute $5 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) for vital food assistance to Palestine refugees in the Gaza Strip at a time of global food insecurity.
“I am very pleased to announce that the Government of Japan is contributing $5 million to UNRWA to support Palestine refugee families in the midst of growing concerns about the global rise in food prices affecting the most vulnerable population in the Gaza Strip,” Ambassador Masayuki Majushi, Japan’s representative in Palestine, said.
“This contribution represents our firm commitment and solidarity with the Palestine refugees at a time when the world is facing multiple serious humanitarian crises.”
UNRWA’s Director of Partnerships Karim Amer said: “This generous and timely contribution from the Government of Japan is a very welcome message of support for the families of Palestine refugees in Gaza.”
“On behalf of UNRWA, I wish to thank the Government of Japan, one of our trusted and consistent partners. This is a partnership that the Agency is proud of and hopes to maintain and grow “.
The Government of Japan was a dedicated donor to UNRWA and had supported the Agency since 1953. In 2021, the Government of Japan was the Agency’s fifth largest contributor. With the sustained support of donors such as the Government of Japan, the Agency has been able to provide vital services to Palestine refugees throughout the Middle East in the face of the Agency’s ongoing challenges.
