What do Tunisian protesters need to calm down??
Hundreds of demonstrators assembled in central Tunis on Sunday to oppose a referendum on a new constitution that they view as unconstitutional that is scheduled to take place on Monday.
Less than a month ago, President Kais Saied presented the draft constitution, which would have significantly increased his powers while decreasing those of the court and parliament.
Since he moved against the elected parliament a year ago, removing the cabinet and attempting to rule by decree in what many call a coup, the referendum is the most recent step in what his detractors refer to as a march toward one-man rule.
The coalition, which comprises Citizens Against the Coup and Ennahdha, the largest Muslim party in the disbanded parliament, organized the demonstration on Saturday.
There was no violence, despite the large number of police stationed along the avenue.
Police used sticks and pepper spray to disperse participants during a separate protest held by civil society organizations and smaller political parties on Friday evening, making several arrests.
