North Korea accuses the U.S. of usaing biological weapons in Ukraine
North Korea escalated its words war against the United States, with Pyongyang explicitly accusing Washington on Sunday of using biological weapons in Ukraine, repeated accusations made by Russia, and rejected by the United Nations in March.
According to North Korea’s official news agency, Washington has “set up a number of biological laboratories in dozens of countries and regions, including Ukraine, in defiance of international treaties,” citing elements “discovered” by Russia.
Moscow ally Pyongyang also accused Washington of being the “evil sponsor of bioterrorism throwing humanity into destruction”, and of launching a “bacterial war” during the Korean War in the 1950s.
China, North Korea, and Russia have repeated such accusations in the past.
But Washington denied it.
Moscow charged Washington in March with funding research to develop biological weapons in Russia-invaded Ukraine in late February.
Washington and Kyiv deny the existence of laboratories aimed at producing such weapons in Ukraine. The United States fears that these accusations will involve Moscow’s intention to use these weapons soon in Ukraine.
Izumi Nakamitsu, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations for Disarmament Affairs, said in March that the United Nations was “not aware of any biological weapons program in Ukraine.”
Pyongyang said last February that US policy was “the deep cause of the Ukrainian crisis.”
North Korea has officially recognized two unilaterally declared pro-Russian separatist zones in eastern Ukraine.
