Loss of the Y chromosome exposes men to heart failure
A new study confirmed that the loss of the Y chromosome, part of male DNA, increases men’s risk of potentially life-threatening heart problems as they age.
Humans are known to have two “X” and “Y” chromosomes.
Males usually have one chromosome each, while women own two “X” chromosomes.
Scientists at the University of Virginia, United States, and Uppsala University, Sweden, have shown that the loss of the Y chromosome can damage men’s hearts.
After considering the medical and genetic data, the scientists found that men who lost the Y chromosomes were more likely to die from heart disease, including heart failure over the following 12 years than those who did not suffer a Y loss.
