New treatment for acne
Classoterone is the first real advancement in acne treatment, after several decades during which antidermal treatments have not developed.
While the treatment use began in the United States several months ago, the timing of its availability worldwide remains unknown.
Since the end of 2021, American doctors have been able to prescribe the new acne-treated ointment, a skin disease that people rarely escape during their lives.
Acne, the appearance of pills on the skin and greasy skin, affects about three in four adolescents. A large number of adults also develop this skin disease.
There is a dearth of therapeutic advances to cope with this very common disease, although research on other details such as the diet’s role in the onset of acne has recently evolved.
Prior to the discovery of Classoterone, anti-acne treatments had not made any progress in about 40 years.
Topical treatments were divided into two main categories, the first being treatment that eliminates acne-causing bacteria through antibiotics, while the second reducing the accumulation of dead skin cells that promote inflammation.
Classoterone makes skin cells less responsive to hormones that release fatty blowing, an oily substance excreted by acne sufferers in excess.
Other oral treatments also work at the hormonal level, but they are usually pills and therefore only prescribed to women. Through their direct effect on hormone production, they lead to stronger side effects caused by acne.
However, any new impact mechanism cannot guarantee the effectiveness of the drug. It should be shown that the latter has positive results, as was the case in the case of Classoterone, a study published in 2020 in the journal Gamma Dermatologie.
It found that this drug is more effective than alternative treatment given to patients automatically, and does not lead to severe side effects.
The results of this study were sufficient to allow US authorities to use Classoterone.
