115 killed, 150 missed by Megi storm in the Philippines
The number of killed citizens by landslides and floods caused by tropical storm “Megi” in the Philippines has risen to 115 on Thursday according to official figures.
Dozens remain unaccounted for, with the most powerful storm that hit the country this year causing several days of heavy rain, forcing tens of thousands to be displaced to evacuation centers.
The central province of Leti is the worst affected by storm “Meiji”, with rains wiping out agriculture and houses.
Emergency personnel in Abu Yug municipality rescued dozens of bodies from a coastal village destroyed by a landslide on Tuesday. Authorities said at least 26 people were killed and about 150 were missing, with little hope of finding anyone alive.
Local authorities announced that 86 people had been killed and dozens wounded in vegetable, rice, and coconut villages around Bay last weekend. At least 117 remain missing.
Cantanius was the worst affected region, with 32 people dead and 103 not found, while 17 people died in the neighboring village of Ponga.
The Philippine National Disaster Management Agency said in its latest update that three people were also drowned on the main southern island of Mindanao.
Storm Meiji comes four months after a severe cyclone destroyed large distances of the country, killing more than 400 people and displacing hundreds of thousands.
