Major fire erupts in Berlin after ammunition warehouse explodes
A major bushfire broke out on Thursday morning in Berlin following an explosion at a police ammunition depot, the fire department said.
Fire crews confirmed that “Gronevald Forest is experiencing fire” in the west of the city and “there are explosions.” “The fire spread over an area of 15 thousand square meters, first at a site where ammunition and explosives were stored and defused by the police and then in the surrounding forest.”
A spokesman stated that “the situation is unclear and the fire continues to spread uncontrollably into the forest”.
Firefighters were unable to intervene immediately because of the risk of an explosion.
They were stationed within one kilometer of the ammunition depot, where several explosions took place.
The Berlin region is extremely dry.
A major bushfire in July hit more than 850 hectares in the south of Brandenburg, the area around the capital.
To the south, rescue elements are still battling a fire in the “Bohemian Switzerland” reservation that began in Czechia before spreading to Germany.
A new heatwave affects Germany like the rest of Europe.
A large part of the country suffers from a “severe” or “extraordinary” drought, including Berlin, according to an environmental research institute.
Scientists say frequent heatwaves are clear evidence of climate warming, considering that these are expected to increase, prolong and intensify.
Rising temperatures and the proliferation of heatwaves and droughts create favorable conditions for wildfires or forests
