“Hi Mum”… New scam code via WhatsApp
The Spanish and Australian police, via social media networks, warned of a new scam through which a group of cybercriminals intends to get your money within minutes without raising any kind of doubt via “Hi Mum”.
Where an unknown number calls you through WhatsApp pretending to be your son or daughter. After conducting a social engineering exercise, and discovering whether the victim had offspring or not, those responsible for the attack would write to him as if they were his children from a new telephone number: “Mom! My mobile phone broke down, that’s my new number.”
After explaining that his phone number was no longer working as a result of an alleged ban, the cybercriminal pretending to be the victim’s son would request a favor from his mother or father: “I have something too. You’re busy? Are you busy?”
Although you ask him to contact you, he will ignore it to avoid detection. Instead, he will decide to continue his strategy with the aim of stealing large sums of money from you without raising doubts: “I have to pay something and I have no card in my hand. Can you transfer me as I pay? I will refund you when the card is handy?”.
That’s how they try to trick you through WhatsApp.
If you decide to help your son or daughter, the person responsible for the scam will send you details of the account for which you have to make the deposit.
In the example shared by the National Police via social media networks, they ask you for 2,900 euros. However, as the National Cyber Security Institute (Incibe) explains, every time events like the one we gave you, the message and numbers can vary in order to reach more people.
Despite the fact that you ask all kinds of questions to learn more about this suspicious process, cybercriminals will only commit to taking your money as quickly as possible without explaining anything else.
If you deposit the amount, nothing else will happen. Because it’s a scam, their only goal is to get money and not give more details.
Besides, what can we do if we are the victim of a scam for these people? First of all, contact the National Police and follow their instructions.
