North Korean leader’s sister promises retaliation
The North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s sister accused Seoul of causing the outbreak of the COVID epidemic in the country, promising a “retaliation” with Pyongyang declaring its “victory” over the epidemic.
North Korea previously attributed the COVID outbreak on its territory to “strange matters” occurring near the border with the South, allegations which Seoul strongly rejected.
Despite the ban that came into effect in 2021, South Korean activists have for years been sending balloons across the border to the north carrying propaganda leaflets and US dollar currency, which Pyongyang has been protesting for a long time.
North Korea’s official KCNA news agency reported on Thursday that Yu Jong had held these activities at the border responsible for the outbreak of the COVID epidemic in the north, considering it a “crime against humanity.”
The many States and the World Health Organization recognized the “risk of spreading a contagious disease through contact with contaminated objects”, according to the Agency.
“It is very worrying that South Korea is sending leaflets, money, booklets, and dirty materials to our region.”
Pyongyang considered a “strong retaliation,” Yu Jong warned, adding that if balloons continue to be sent “we will respond by eliminating not only the virus but also South Korean authorities.”
Seoul said last month that “there are no officially confirmed cases of COVID through contact with mail or materials.”
Yu Jong’s comments come as the North Korean leader declared Wednesday a “victory” over the COVID epidemic, following the fact that no new infections have been recorded in the country for nearly two weeks.
Experts say North Korea has one of the world’s worst healthcare systems with its hospitals lacking equipment and limited intensive care rooms.
Even Kim Jong Un appeared to have suffered from Covid, according to comments made by his sister.
Yu Jong pointed out that Kim “had a high temperature during this war-like period of health isolation, but he couldn’t lie down for a moment thinking about the people he was responsible for.”
