Domino’s declares bankruptcy, withdraws from Pizza Country
Domino’s, the popular pizza chain, closed its doors in Italy after the company running stores in the country filed for bankruptcy, according to media reports.
Domino’s struggled to win customers in its hometown of pizza since its launch there in 2015.
After the announcement of Domino’s withdrawal from Italian markets, many social media users expressed their joy at the news, according to Monte Carlo.
“I’ve always wondered how Domino’s can survive in New Jersey, let alone Italy,” journalist Dave Jamieson tweeted.
Another tweeter considered the opening of “Domino’s” in Italy to be akin to trying to sell snow in the Arctic.
The company considered that the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated restrictions had caused significant material damage to the Domino’s chain.
The company also said it faced increased competition as traditional restaurants began using delivery apps.
When entering Italy seven years ago, Domino’s aimed to distinguish itself from the country’s traditional pizza makers through a comprehensive home delivery service and a distinctive list of American-style additions such as pineapple.
