Polio spreads among New York kids
Health officials in the US state and New York City confirmed “Friday” that the polio virus had been detected in its sanitation system.
The New York State Health Authority fears that polio will spread again, which is considered to have been completely eradicated in the United States.
“The risk to New Yorkers is real, but the protection is very simple – get a polio vaccine.”
Polio vaccination did not fully cover the proportion of 14% between six months and five years of age.
Authorities reported a case that emerged last July when an unvaccinated person contracted polio in Rockland County, the first case in the United States in nearly a decade.
According to local health authorities, the initial sequence at the time indicated that transmission came from a person who had been vaccinated with the oral polio vaccine, which contained weak live viruses.
This is no longer permitted in the United States, so the virus may have come from somewhere outside the country.
Polio is divided into wild-type viruses and vaccine-derived viruses, and wild poliovirus has been found in Pakistan and Afghanistan but has also been detected in Africa this year.
