Russian President Vladimir Putin revived a Soviet-era award for women who have 10 or more children as Russia grapples with a demographic crisis exacerbated by the war in Ukraine.
Joseph Stalin established the title of “Mother Heroine” in 1944 to encourage large families after the death of tens of millions of Soviet citizens during World War II, and more than 400,000 women received the award before it was abolished in 1991 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Putin had also previously announced that recipients of the Parental Glory award, or “Parental Glory”, which he created in 2008 for families with 7 or more children, will receive additional payments of up to 700,000 rubles, equivalent to $ 11,460, but some Kremlin critics accused Putin of encouraging women. The statistics service also said that the number of residents in Russia fell by 380,000 between last January and June, at a time when the United Nations predicted that in a worst-case scenario, the population in 2100 may drop to only 83 million
