TikTok prepares to fight misinformation during US congressional elections
Chinese social media platform TikTok announced a range of steps to ensure that the use of the platform to spread misleading or incorrect information is limited to influencing voter trends in the U.S. congressional midterm elections scheduled for early November.
CNN DotCom, which specializes in technology topics, reported that the TikTok platform for the dissemination of short videos has launched an election center to fight misinformation, where users who follow electoral content via the platform will be linked to documented sources of information in more than 45 languages.
TikTok stated that ensuring access to “documented information” is part of the platform’s overall strategy to combat the dissemination of misinformation.
Content associated with the midterm elections scheduled for November 8 will be marked to facilitate the user’s knowledge that the content is electoral.
Accounts associated with Governments, politicians, and political parties will also be distinguished to facilitate users’ identification of such accounts.
The social media platform said it was collaborating with a large number of prestigious data verification institutions to help assess the accuracy of published information in more than 30 languages.
The platform will not allow any electoral content to be shared or reposted before it undergoes information verification.
TikTok also reiterated its commitment to its policies by refusing to publish any paid political advertisements on the platform.
Social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook had previously announced plans to deal with misleading content during the midterm elections in the United States.
