Militants ambush security post in Yemen, 14 killed
The morning attack in Ahwar, in Abyan province, targeted a post manned by troops from the Security Belt, a security force loyal to the secessionist Southern Transitional Council.
Brig. Abdou Megali, the military spokesman for the internationally recognized government, said at least eight soldiers and six militants were killed in the attack. Among the dead was a senior commander of the armed forces fighting terrorist groups in Yemen, the seatbelt said in a statement.
He also said that a number of soldiers were also injured in the attack.
No group claimed responsibility for the ambush. But it bore the hallmarks of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP.
AQAP has long been considered the most dangerous branch of the global network and attempted to carry out attacks on the mainland of the United States.
AQAP, together with an affiliate of the Daesh group, is active in several regions of Yemen and has taken advantage of the civil war that lasted years to make its way.
