Wennesland, Haniyeh discuss tensions in Palestine
The UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process discussed the latest tensions in the occupied West Bank, Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip with Hamas’s political chief during a telephone call Friday.
The Palestinian resistance group, Hamas, reported that Tor Wennesland asserted Ismail Haniyeh over meetings he held with provincial and international parties about the tension that scaled in Jerusalem, the occupied West Bank, and Gaza Strip.
Wennesland stated he got three important letters to Israel which were the closure of Al-Aqsa Mosque to non-Muslims until the end of Ramadan, the ending of attacks and raids in the West Bank, and the de-escalation of suspense, it said in a statement.
The envoy also connected on communications with the Jordanian administration as part of keeping the historical status quo of holy sites in Jerusalem.
Haniyeh praised Egypt, Qatar, the UN, and Wennesland’s actions, noting that they show the gravity of the current situation.
He alerted that if tension rises further in Gaza and Masjid al-Aqsa, things might get out of control.
Since the product of the illegal partition wall in 2002, the holy city of Jerusalem has been separated on all sides, and calling by West Bank-based Palestinians has become much more complicated and restricted.
Israel deters Palestinians from the West Bank from reaching Jerusalem except on Fridays in Ramadan. Moreover, it does not let Palestinians in the Gaza Strip visit the city throughout the year.
