Israeli artillery shells hit southern Lebanon
Israeli troops shot dozens of artillery shells into southern Lebanon after a missile was fired over the border from Lebanon into an open region across the border.
Lebanese media said that UN peacekeeping forces (UNIFIL) in the country’s south launched sirens along with several of its parts near the border, while the Lebanese Army deployed troops.
UNIFIL Head of Mission Commander Aroldo Lázaro called for “calm and restraint” in a statement via tweet.
No injuries or casualties were reported on either side of the border.
It was not clear which group in Lebanon was behind the missile raid.
An Israeli military spokesperson said in a press statement via tweet that artillery forces shot open areas in southern Lebanon where the missile came from, as well as an infrastructural mark.
The accident takes place as tensions have flared in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem in the latest weeks after Israeli forces raid the Al-Aqsa compound (Islam’s third most sacred site) many times during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan starting marches across Palestinian territories, including besieged Gaza.
