Tourism ministry discovers Kanani statue back to 2,500 years BC in Gaza
Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities on Monday discovered a Canaanite statue that was found by a farmer while he was cultivating his land, in the Sheikh Hamouda area of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip.
Director-General of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage, Dr. Jamal Abu Rida, demonstrated that the Canaanite statue belongs to the Canaanite goddess “Anah”, who is the queen of love, beauty, and war, according to Canaanite mythology and belief.
Dr. Abu Rida added that the statue is 22 cm tall, made of limestone, with an integrated head without its body, and attached to the head with the snake crown which was used by the gods as a symbol of strength and invincibility.
The uncovered archaeological discoveries, according to Abu Rida, demonstrate the Palestinian people’s historical entitlement to their territory, legacy, and civilization’s sublimity thousands of years ago.
The old commercial land route for succeeding civilizations in Palestine was the Sheikh Hamouda hill, also known as the 86th archaeological site, which is located 2 kilometers from the town of Qarara in Khan Yunis Governorate.
