Rockets hit the Iraqi military base with foreign troops
On Monday five rockets targeted an Iraqi military base that houses troops from an international anti-jihadist coalition without causing death or damage, a military official said.
A coalition source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said five rockets hit the Ain Assad base in Anbar province, according to initial reports.
“The Iraqi security forces responded. No casualties or injuries reported for the moment, “added the source.
An Iraqi security source in Anbar had initially reported three rockets falling near the base, controlled by Iraq but which housed US-led coalition troops against Daesh terrorists.
Rockets and armed drones often target Ain Assad’s base. The latest such incident on April 30 saw two rockets fall nearby without causing damage or death.
A previously unknown group hostile to the US military presence in Iraq, the “International Resistance”, claimed responsibility for the attack on a pro-Iranian Telegram channel.
In recent months, rocket and drone attacks have targeted US troops and interests in Iraq. Many are not claimed, but Washington systematically blames the pro-Iranian factions for them.
Last year Iraq announced the end of the international coalition’s combat mission after helping the state defeat IS forces.
About 2,500 US soldiers and about 1,000 soldiers from other coalition members remain at three Iraqi military bases to continue a training and advisory role that began more than a year ago.
