Nuclear reactor on Moon to explore Mars
NASA planned to install a nuclear reactor on the moon to help explore its surface and pave the way for missions to Mars and beyond.
The Space Agency announced with the United States Department of Energy that it had selected three design concepts for the lunar nuclear power system. The three proposals could be ready for launch on the Moon for a practical presentation by the end of the day.
If it did well, this power facility could be useful for future space exploration efforts under the umbrella of the Artemis Space Flight Programme, led by NASA, Artemis’ primary goal is to facilitate the return of humans to the Moon, with short-term targets for reaching the Moon’s south pole by 2025.
Long-term objectives include the creation of a sustainable human presence on the Moon’s surface which will be an invaluable and reliable source of energy.
