Arabic teenage fencer rejects facing Israeli rival in World Championships
A Jordanian fencer obtained across-the-board glory after withdrawing from the Cadet and Junior World Championships 2022 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to reject facing an Israeli competitor in solidarity with the persecuted Palestinian people and in resistance to the normalization of ties with the Israeli occupation.
Eyas al-Zamer was set to take part in the junior men’s foil rounds of the international professional championship for young rivals, which was carried out in Dubai.
Zamer obtained praise for his view on social media outlets after Arabic-language media outlets reported that he withdrew as soon as he saw out he would have to face an Israeli performer.
Jordanians took to Twitter to honor the young player.
Jordan’s Move Boycott movement praised the fencer’s denial to play against the Israeli competitor.
“This is how we, old and young, know our enemy well. We do not accept to contribute to [attempts aimed at] polishing up its image and whitewashing its crimes,” it said in an Arabic tweet published via its Twitter page.
Another Jordanian movement, Boycott for Palestine, also hailed Zamer for his judgment.
“The athlete’s sacrifice to prevent Israel from leaving isolation and remind the world of the importance of opposing the regime’s crimes and occupation through international global sports events deserves praise,” it said.
