Russian influencers boycott fashion brand Chanel for ‘Russophobia’
Russian influencers are cutting their Chanel bags on social media after the luxury fashion brand rejected to sell a high-end bag to Anna Kalashnikova, a Russian actor-singer in Dubai. After allowing her to buy the bag, they invited her to vow that she would not wear the bag in Russia.
Russian influencers took to social media to call out the apparent height of ‘Russophobia’ within luxury fashion, placing economic sanctions carried out by Europe as proof of their own victimization in Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
This week, Anna Kalashnikova, a singer and actor with 2.4 million followers on Instagram, published about her own knowledge with prejudice. When she walked into a Chanel store in Dubai, she found that the brand no longer marketed its bags to Russians.
DJ Katya Guseva, TV presenter Marina Ermoshkina, and model Victoria Bonya also heeded suit, with a suggestive motion to the French fashion house by cutting up their handbags with kitchen scissors and garden shears.
Russian influencers are cutting up their Chanel bags in rallies, after Chanel discontinued processes in Russia, in response to Vladimir Putin’s charge of Ukraine.
Marina Ermoshkina, a Russian TV presenter, responded in shock when she learned that workers at a Chanel store in Dubai had been forbidden to sell a high-end bag to a Russian customer. They later allowed her to buy the bag after requesting her to sign papers attesting that she would not wear the bag in Russia.
Besides, Ermoshkina, 28, bought a pair of gardening scissors, took a video of herself as she cut her Chanel bag in half, and posted it to Instagram.
“This is Russophobia,” she stated in a phone call from Moscow. “This is the purest form of discrimination.”
