Parents of American child killed in massacre demand $150m for denial it
The parents of a child killed in the worst school massacre in the United States in 2012 asked jurors Wednesday to sentence radio presenter Alex Jones, a far-right supporter of conspiracy theories, to $150 million for denying the shooting.
“We are here to ensure that Alex Jones and his company pay for the lies we are spreading,” said Kyle Farrar, a lawyer for Scarlett Lewis and Neil Heslin after a 10-day trial in Texas court.
The couple lost their six-year-old son when a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut, in 2012, in an incident that killed 20 children and six adults.
Alex Jones, a far-right supporter of conspiracy theories, claimed on his site “Info Wars” that the massacre was merely a representational scene led by firearms opponents.
The parents, however, said that his lies had given his audience a payment that allowed him to make millions of dollars in what had become the target of harassment campaigns.
The family lawyer added that Jones had spread false information and was “spreading hatred, which is why people are so angry.”
For his part, Andino Renal, one of Jones’ lawyers, told the jury that the founder of Info Wars should not be held responsible for any of his listeners.
“Alex published a story and made a mistake. Put his trust in the wrong people. publishing a story that is found to be incorrect “.
Many families sued him for damages.
Jones finally publicly acknowledged the fact but refused to cooperate with the courts.
Consequently, judges in Texas and Connecticut sentenced him to pay compensation to the plaintiffs, leaving it to the jury to determine the amounts.
