FIFA appoints special committee after tension with government
International Football Association (FIFA) on Monday appointed a temporary committee to run the local federation in El Salvador, a month after suspending matches in the Central American country following accusations that the federation was under attack from the government.
FIFA, which first announced its plans to the committee earlier this month, said the committee would work in place of the national federation for up to one year.
“The committee has fully and officially assumed its responsibilities and is already exercising its functions,” Marco Leal, FIFA’s regional representative, told reporters, stressing that the committee was now “the highest football authority in El Salvador.”
The tension began in the middle of last month when a court affiliated with the National Sports Institute headed by the half-brother of President Najib Abu Kila temporarily suspended seven officials of the federation, including its president Hugo Carrillo, for refusing to “adapt” the conditions of the federation to the current law.
Prosecutors also raided the offices of the federation and Carrillo’s home on suspicion of money laundering after receiving a report from the sports institute.
