Samsung exposed to major hacker
Samsung warned its customers about a cybersecurity incident in which “an unauthorized third party obtained information from some Samsung systems in the US,” including things like names, birthdays, contact information and product registration information, according to Reuters.
Although the hack took place last July, the company said it discovered the breach on August 4, and is currently investigating a “leading third-party cybersecurity company.” The company contacted its affected customers by email.
Samsung said customers’ social security and credit card numbers were not affected, but information including name, contact, demographic details, date of birth and product registration data was compromised.
According to a company post about the incident, it has sent emails to customers specifically affected, and will continue to do so as the investigation progresses.
However, the kind of information that the hackers eventually get can be very useful in planning future attacks that use social engineering technology to access other services used by the victims.
Samsung said that at this time you do not have to change your password, or take any specific steps to keep Samsung products or accounts secure, as “consumer devices have not been affected in connection with this incident,” according to the company’s statement.
However, the company recommends that you monitor any unusual activity on your account, and be extra vigilant when it comes to phishing emails.
It was not immediately clear how many customers were affected. Samsung did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
