Most US places with highest wildfire risk
Forecasters reported on Monday the West could be looking at an especially bad wildfire year, as many destructive fires have already torched well before the most desirable, driest months. A fast-moving blaze Wednesday night demolished 20 homes in a wealthy Orange County, California, community. In New Mexico, more acres have already burned from enormous fires in the first five months of this year than in any other year over the last decade.
Wildfire is a known risk to homeowners in the West, but quantifying the risk of wildfires has until now been harder than floods, for example, because of their nature. Wildfires extended rapidly, the wind can move embers and sparks long distances, detecting on trees and constructions.
On Monday, nonprofit First Street Foundation emitted a nationwide wildfire threat review of a massive trove of data that shows homeowners and industry owners how at-risk their property is to wildfire. The data will be incorporated into Realtor.com, so that prospective buyers can see what their fire risk for any given property is.
