Contact lenses treat eye diseases
A joint research team from the United States and South Korea developed microneedle contact lenses to inject medication for eye disease.
As part of the study published by Science Advances, the study team from Bordeaux and Michigan Universities in the United States, Hanyang and Hunjik Universities, and the Comoh National Institute of Technology in South Korea stated that the new contact lenses had proven successful after experimenting on test rabbits.
Currently, the treatment of ophthalmic diseases is based on the use of drops placed on the outer parts of the eye or by injection.
The medical science website Medical Express said that the new contact lenses contain biodegradable needles and are infinitesimal.
Microneedles contain a base of silicone and a mixture of pharmaceutical material to ensure that they are long enough before they are degraded inside the eye, encased from the outside with polymeric materials.
During the experiments, the research team found that the new technique helps treat modern corneal disease almost entirely in just 28 days.
