Dogs can see with their noses!!!
A new study discovered that dogs may be able to “see” with their noses as veterinarians have confirmed that blind dogs acting quite naturally avoid colliding with objects through their noses.
A team of veterinarians from Cornell University in New York discovered that vision and smell were already linked in dogs’ brains, which does not happen with other animal species, according to an article for the British website Sky News.
The team conducted MRI scans on a number of dogs of different breeds.
The researchers wrote in their study that all the tests revealed a “pathway” linking the optical processing area of the brain to the olfactory fluid. They added that this pathway also includes the part of the brain responsible for behavioral and emotional responses.
The study team confirmed that these findings indicate that the dogs’ smell and vision are complementary in some way, meaning that they may use their sense of smell to locate things they don’t see.
They pointed out that this is particularly useful if dogs suffer from a vision problem or if they are completely lost.
Study team leader Dr. Philippa Johnson said, “When humans enter a room, they use their eyes primarily to identify objects inside, but dogs seem to combine smell with vision in the way they know the things around them, and even decide to enter a particular place or room essentially after smelling according to Monte Carlo.
She added, “One veterinary ophthalmologist told me that sometimes dogs are tested and found to be completely blind, but their owners don’t believe him because their dogs behave normally and don’t bump into anything at home.
“We seem to have succeeded in finding the reason for this in our last study”.
Noting that this discovery is the first of its kind, the association between vision and smell was not observed in any of the other animals.
