Facebook to block hashtags tied to Bucha killings
Facebook to block hashtags tied to Bucha killings when a business representative revealed on Monday that Facebook owner Meta Platforms temporarily banned hashtags linked to civilian casualties in northern Ukraine, where bodies of civilians shot at close range were discovered in a town retaken from Russian forces.
The assassinations in Bucha, Ukraine, have prompted the West to promise more penalties on Moscow.
Automated systems that scan for violent content on Facebook and Instagram, which Meta also owns, were responsible for censoring hashtags like Bucha and buchamassacre, according to Meta spokesperson Andy Stone.
“As a result of the graphic stuff people shared using these hashtags, this happened automatically.” “We worked promptly to unblock the hashtags when we were made aware of the situation yesterday,” he stated on Twitter.
When shared to raise awareness of probable human rights abuses, Facebook and Instagram allow graphic and violent content to be posted, but they erase it if it is overtly explicit or praises pain.
Users must click-through warning labels before they can see the photos on some graphic posts, according to the social media business.
Human rights organizations have criticized Meta’s strategy of eliminating violent content during conflicts, claiming that the company’s practice of deleting data from its servers after 90 days results in the erasure of crucial evidence of conflict crimes.
“We’re exploring ways to retain this type and other types of content when we delete it,” Stone added, referring to the conflict in Ukraine.
