FIFA Secretary General welcomes vibrant cultures amid Women’s World Cup celebrations

FIFA General Secretary Fatima Samoura announced that the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup will “provide a platform for inspiration and unification” with Australia and New Zealand celebrating one year until the start of the tournament.

FIFA’s chief official was in Sydney/Gadigal to celebrate the milestone where a large and colorful celebration took place on the beaches of Sydney’s famous harbour. Other events took place in all nine host cities, with Hamilton/Kirickererwa hosting in particular a lighting ceremony with the dawn of New Zealand.

“This competition will provide a platform for inspiration and unification through the power of women’s football, and FIFA, together with host countries, looks forward to welcoming players and fans from all over the world and going beyond greatness together in 2023,” Samora said.

“In particular, I want to highlight the warm cultural welcome we have received from both host countries, which highlights the spirit of both countries and reflects well on our game. It was also exciting to meet so many inspiring local women who support the tournament and have such a positive impact on society.

“This kind of support and passion will undoubtedly make the FIFA Women’s World Cup – the first in the southern hemisphere – truly unforgettable.”

The highlight of the visit was the Unity Pitch – a small portable stadium inspired by the brand identity of the tournament that will travel around both countries.

The Secretary-General of FIFA also met with several local officials and dignitaries, including members of the Governments of Australia and New South Wales, the Australian Olympic Committee and local administrators, with the post-tournament legacy a major topic of discussion.

Finally, on Wednesday evening, FIFA’s Secretary General honored the Sydney Harbour Bridge with tournament colours, with similar activities being carried out throughout each host city.
