France declares beluga whale dead after recovered from River Seine
The beluga whale, recovered from the Seine River early Wednesday, is in a tunnel despite a relentless attempt to save it, authorities said.
“Despite an unprecedented rescue, we regret to announce the whale’s death.”
The French authorities recovered a beluga whale from the Seine River on Wednesday and continued to work to save it after it strayed into the river and his life was at risk.
The white whale swam to Paris, far from its natural habitat in polar or sub-polar waters, before being taken to Hoyes by local authorities.
The authorities aim to transport the whale to another Hoyes closer to the sea and its salty waters.
The beluga whale, apparently malnourished, was first observed in the Seine River last week.
Although transporting the whale poses a danger to it, C. Shepherd, who is involved in the rescue, said that it could not remain in the river’s warm, unsalted waters for much longer.
It was unclear why the whale had lost its natural habitat.
In late May, a sick whale died of natural causes after separating from his family and traveling tens of kilometers to the Seine River, after attempts to guide him back to sea failed.
