iPhone supplier Pegatron to stop work at two factories in China
iPhone supplier Pegatron to stop work at two factories in China, as the metropolis of 25 million people remains under a rigorous Covid lockdown, one of Apple’s biggest suppliers has halted production at its factories in and around Shanghai.
Pegatron said on Tuesday that manufacturing at its factory in Beijing, as well as the neighboring city of Kunshan, had been halted until further notice.
The firm said in a statement that “the date of factory reopening will be advised by the local government,” and that it will cooperate with officials to resume operations “as soon as possible.”
It has joined a growing list of businesses whose operations have been hampered by China’s newest outbreak of Covid-19 infections, and the restrictions that have followed.
Shanghai, China’s financial capital and home to hundreds of international corporations’ regional headquarters, has become the epicenter of the country’s latest coronavirus outbreak, as well as the latest test of its “zero-Covid” plan.
Further than 220,000 Covid cases have been reported in the city since the latest wave began in March, resulting in tight stay-at-home orders and more hassles for companies.
The automobile industry in the country has been particularly heavily damaged. Volkswagen (VLKAF) announced this week that production at its factories in Shanghai and Changchun, a Chinese manufacturing powerhouse, had been halted for several weeks.
Toyota (TM) cited a similar problem, stating that it is Changchun production has been down for nearly a month.
Tesla (TSLA), which operates a Gigafactory in Shanghai, has been forced to halt manufacturing since late March, according to Reuters.CNN Business reached out to the company for comment, but it did not respond.
