North Africa, Middle East reached their 10-year low of refugees as conflicts diminish
However, the IDMC report noted that the number of internally displaced people in the region remained “worryingly high”, warning that the long-term displacement trend “would never be reversed” without safe and sustainable conditions for IDPs. .
IDMC Director Alexandra Bilak reported, “Peacemaking and development initiatives are needed to resolve the underlying challenges that keep the lives of displaced people in limbo.”
Additionally, the report indicated “unprecedented numbers” of people displaced by violence in Afghanistan and Myanmar over the course of 2021, with similarly high numbers for Somalia and South Sudan.
Globally, the number of displaced people has reached 38 million, 94% of whom have been forced to flee from meteorological disasters, with more than 25 million under the age of 18.
While more data is needed to assess long-term impacts, Bilak said it is clear that protecting and supporting displaced children and young people is critical for the future, noting that “a happy and healthy child” would be more likely to contribute to a society and functioning economy “.
He added: “Children and young people are agents of change. Recognizing them as such is critical to protecting development gains and reducing the risk of future crises. Preparing for the world of tomorrow must begin with their active participation and leadership ”.
