Shark devours elderly Romanian tourist in Egypt
A Romanian tourist died in a shark attack during a holiday in Egypt, according to the Roman exterior, in the second fatal shark attack in a few days.
An Austrian woman (68) died last Friday, after losing an arm and foot in another “short-fin mako” shark attack, while swimming in the Red Sea near the coastal city of Hurghada, according to Sky News Arabic.
Egypt’s Ministry of Environment announced in a statement on Sunday that two women had been killed south of the Red Sea city of Hurghada after being attacked by a shark while swimming.
The ministry said, “two women were attacked by a shark while playing surface swimming in the area facing the resort of Sahl Hashish south of Hurghada.”
The statement added that the Task Force on the Causes of the Accident is “completing its work to accurately determine the reasons for the behavior caused by the shark causing the accident towards the missing persons.”
On the other hand, Egyptian local media reported the death of a second woman in another shark attack on Sunday.
The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it was working to identify the victim, in preparation for informing her family and initiating proceedings to return the body to Romania.
On Saturday, the Egyptian authorities closed part of the country’s coast on the Red Sea following the death of the Austrian woman.
Authorities also banned water activities including diving, snorkeling, surfing, and water skiing, and fishing boats were banned from disembarking in the waters off Hurghada.
A graphic recording spread through the Internet pages, which hesitated to show the attack that claimed the Austrian lady’s life, relatively close to the shore, as it appeared from a nearby sidewalk.
The recording shows water turning red due to the blood, while passers-by throw a rubber float at the sidewalk.
It is not yet clear how the shark managed to reach the beach.
Shark attacks have been fairly rare in the Red Sea coastal area in recent years.
