Sleeping in light has dangerous risks
Sleeping in light has dangerous risks, and if you prefer to sleep in the middle of the day, you may need to modify your habits soon, as a recent medical study has connected sleeping in a dark environment to an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes.
Researchers from Northwestern University in Chicago concluded that shutting out all lights and closing the curtains before going to bed can lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes.
Even weak lighting from natural or artificial sources during sleep can damage the cardiovascular function and raise insulin resistance, as muscle, fat, and liver cells struggle to absorb glucose from the body, according to the study.
The researchers discovered that moderate light exposure induced the body to become alert, which was accompanied by an increase in heart rate, as well as the force with which it contracts, and the pace of blood delivery to the body’s blood arteries for the flow of oxygenated blood.
“The study highlights the harms of exposure to the lighting during sleep since it can disrupt glucose regulation and metabolism,” Phyllis Zee, chair of sleep medicine at Northwestern University, said of the findings.
“It’s critical that people avoid or limit their exposure to light during sleeping,” the researcher added.
“Light exposure during the day, in addition to sleep, nutrition, and exercise, is a key element in maintaining health,” Zee added, “but even modest light intensity at night can affect measures of heart and endocrine function.”
