Washington sanctions Chinese and UAE companies
Chinese and Emirati companies, along with a network of Iranian petrochemical producers, have been hit by secondary US penalties for helping Tehran do its “Avoid Sanctions” by supporting the sale of its petrochemical products in international markets.
The sanctions were imposed on two Hong Kong-based companies, three in Iran and four in the United Arab Emirates, according to an expression released by the US Treasury Department on Thursday.
All property rights of companies under US jurisdiction have been suspended and those involved may be subject to sanctions or penalties.
The sentences were also imposed on Chinese national Jinfeng Gao and Indian national Mohammed Shaheed Ruknooddin Bhore.
“The United States is pursuing the path of meaningful diplomacy to achieve a mutual return to compliance with the joint comprehensive plan of action,” Treasury Department Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian E. Nelson was referring to the Iran nuclear deal.
“Without an agreement, we will continue to use our sanctions agencies to limit exports of petroleum, petroleum products, and petrochemical products from Iran,” he added.
That “Maximum Pressure” The sanctions campaign against the Islamic Republic was launched by former US President Donald Trump, who unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA deal, also known as the nuclear deal, with Iran in 2018. The anti-Iran policy was pushed through by Trump’s successor, Joe Biden.
The deal was signed in 2015 between Iran, the US, Germany, Britain, France, China, and Russia and called for the lifting of all sanctions in exchange for a reduction in Iran’s nuclear program.
In response to Washington’s withdrawal from the pact, Tehran is escalating its nuclear program.
Iran’s deputy foreign minister for economic diplomacy dismissed the latest sanctions as ineffective.
“Our petrochemical industry and its products have long been under sanctions, but our sales through various channels have continued and will continue to do so,” Mehdi Safari to Iranian State Television.
