Brazil finds remains of a missing British journalist in the Amazon

Brazilian police confirmed that a forensic investigation of human remains found in the Amazon rainforest reported on Friday that they belonged to British journalist Dom Phillips, adding that a search was underway for a man suspected of involvement in his murder.

The police stated in a press statement that work was underway to determine the cause of death.

According to a report by the C.S. ” In Brazil on Friday, the remains of another person believed to be his Brazilian expert Bruno Pereira are still under analysis.

Pereira and Phillips disappeared on June 5 in the remote Javari Valley, which borders Peru and Colombia.

During the last week, police found human remains from a grave in the forest where they were led by a fisherman, Amarilldo da Costa Oliveira, who confessed to killing the two men.

Police said their investigation indicated that there were more individuals involved than Oliveira and were now searching for a man named Jefferson da Silva Lima, the third suspect named by police after Oliveira and his brother Ossini da Costa, who had been arrested days earlier.

“There is an arrest warrant issued by the Municipal Court of Atalaya do Norte of the State of Amazon against Jefferson da Silva Lima, also known as Belado da Denha, who was not found at this time,” the police said.

“Investigations indicate that the killers acted alone without leaders or criminal organization behind the crime”.

Police said they were still searching for the boat on which Phillips and Pereira were traveling when they were last seen alive.

On Friday, U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price called for “accountability and justice,” saying Phillips and Pereira were killed for supporting rainforest conservation and indigenous peoples.

“We send our condolences to the family of Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira… We must collectively strengthen efforts to protect environmental defenders and journalists “.
