S. Korean, U.S. resume “expanded deterrence” dialogue
South Korea and America’s defense ministers agreed to expand close joint military exercises and resume their strategic dialogue on extended deterrence.
South Korean Defense Ministry reported the “K” network. B. S World “South Korean Radio on Saturday, an agreement was reached during talks between South Korean Defense Minister Lee Jung-sup and his U.S. counterpart Lloyd Austin in Washington on Friday.
The two sides agreed to combine joint military training in the second half of the year with the south Korean Government-led “Ulchi” exercise and also to continue to strengthen the deterrence status of the allies, including the deployment of a ballistic missile defense system and United States strategic support on the Korean peninsula.
The two sides also affirmed their deal to resume the high-level “consultation and expanded deterrence strategy” package in the near future, to help promote common deterrence and strategic communication.
The Ministers described the security situation on the Korean peninsula as extremely “dangerous” because of the ongoing of North Korean provocations, which they emphasized would only strengthen the bilateral alliance.
