Hong Kong’s funicular is back in business
The funicular, which allows you to go to Victoria Peak and enjoy a panoramic view of Hong Kong, reopened its doors today, Saturday, after a year of work, but in the absence of tourists who are still unable to come due to anti-Covid restrictions.
This train, which saw the light in 1888, was attracting more than six million visitors annually, according to the operator.
As a result of the renovation works, which cost one hundred and two million dollars, the train has become wider and its capacity has increased to reach 210 passengers.
These works also included the renovation of the train station in the center of Hong Kong’s business district.
This funicular was suspended in June 2021, after the tight restrictions at the border in Hong Kong to combat the outbreak of the Covid-19 brought tourism activities to a halt in the place.
The return ticket is now 88 local dollars (11,2 US dollars), an increase of nearly 70% compared to the period before the renewal.
Tourists were absent from the scene on Saturday, as Hong Kong recorded only 134,000 visitors during the year, compared to 65 million in 2018.
Victoria Peak, at an altitude of 396 metres, was an enclave reserved for the wealthy and powerful in Hong Kong.
But it has become a popular destination for residents and visitors who want to enjoy an amazing view of the skyscrapers and the city harbor.
