New lawsuits emerge over Chelsea manager’s sacking
Thomas Tuchel is said to have clashed with Todd Boehly over Cristiano Ronaldo’s potential signing
Thomas Tuchel asked Todd Boehly for a second chance at Chelsea while he was on the verge of sacking, with the former manager and club owner also reportedly at odds over the potential purchase of Cristiano Ronaldo.
In a decision that came as a major shock despite Chelsea’s poor form at the start of the new season, Tuchel was relieved of his duties as Blues head coach on Wednesday morning.
But the drastic move is said to have nothing to do with Tuesday night’s 1-0 defeat by Dinamo Zagreb, nor with the fact that the Blues have lost three out of seven games this season, with a BBC staffer claiming new owner Todd Boehly tried to eliminate traces of the legacy of Roman Abramovich.
If reports are correct, Tuchel and Boehly, who took over the club from former ruler Abramovich in May, were on a collision course after an intense period together buying several new players, which saw Chelsea spend around $300m over the summer. the most spent by all European clubs in the transfer window.
After Cristiano Ronaldo made a transfer request to Manchester United last season in search of Champions League football, the Portuguese star appeared on Boehly’s radar.
When Boehly gave Tuchel what has been described as unprecedented control over Chelsea’s transfer deals – aided by the departure of former director Marina Granovskaia – Tuchel blocked the move for Ronaldo as he felt the 37-year-old was bad for his squad fit type of football he wanted to play.
Tuchel’s refusal to consider Boehly’s proposal is said to have strained the couple’s relationship, especially as the American felt he had brought a new level of influence to Tuchel.
“The first disagreements between Todd Boehly and Thomas Tuchel were market-related” claims Italian transfer insider Matteo Moretto – a claim that has been proven elsewhere.
“The Chelsea owner agreed everything to sign Cristiano Ronaldo but the manager ruled him out and gave priority to others [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang”, who was signed by FC Barcelona on the deadline and the promise of a reunion with Tuchel from his days at Borussia Dortmund was reported.
Left “totally shocked” Through Boehly’s decision after criticizing his players following the Dinamo defeat, Tuchel is said to have asked the owner for a second chance at Stamford Bridge and extended a 20-month tenure in which he won the Champions League crown and European Cup had Supercup and Club World Cup.
According to SunSportTuchel arrived at the club’s Cobham training complex ready to give his underperforming team another dressing but found no one there ready to greet him.
Instead, he was called to a conference call with top executives, asking for more time and the opportunity to reverse the team’s fate in a 10-minute meeting that ended in Tuchel’s sacking.
As a replacement for him, The Athletic reports that Chelsea are meeting Graham Potter from Brighton this afternoon to make him head coach.
Brighton have apparently given permission for the talks, with Chelsea showing their willingness to pay a release clause estimated at £12m-16m ($13.8m-18.4m).
Should negotiations go well, Potter, 47, could lead Chelsea to the Premier League as early as Saturday in the west London derby against Fulham.
